Volunteer in Iceland: Join Our Trail Team for Adventure

Volunteer with Our Trail Team (Iceland)

Join us this summer and volunteer in Iceland, living and working in the stunning Icelandic mountains. We’re looking for dedicated volunteers to help maintain hiking trails and engage in vital nature conservation tasks in Thórsmörk, a remote mountain area in South Iceland. Whether you’re interested in trail construction, landscape restoration, or tree planting, this opportunity allows you to reconnect with nature and make a meaningful impact.

Volunteer in Iceland: Tasks & Roles

Volunteers play a crucial role in maintaining hiking trails and engaging in practical nature conservation. The primary focus is on trail construction, but tasks also include landscape restoration, such as erosion control, and tree planting to protect and revitalise the local environment. The work is physically demanding and often involves substantial hiking, so participants should be prepared for active days in remote locations.

For those interested in longer commitments, we offer 9-week placements as team leaders, in addition to standard 3- and 4-week options. Participants should have some camping and hill-walking experience, a love for wild landscapes, and the resilience to work in Iceland’s famously unpredictable weather.

Volunteer in Iceland: Living & Getting There

This is a camping-based project where volunteers bring their own tents and live at our base camp in Langidalur, Thórsmörk. The campsite includes basic but functional facilities, such as an indoor kitchen, a group tent for meals, a drying hut for equipment, and a hot shower. Volunteers stay in shared spaces for cooking and evening activities, fostering a sense of community among the team.

Participants are responsible for organising and covering their travel to and from Thórsmörk. Most arrive in Iceland via Keflavik Airport, continuing with a bus journey from Reykjavik to the meeting point at the volunteer camp. Food and campsite accommodation are provided throughout the placement, including weekends, ensuring volunteers are well-supported during their stay.

Volunteer in Iceland: What Else

This project is ideal for adventurous individuals who love hiking, immersing themselves in nature, and enjoying a simpler way of life. Working alongside an international team with English as the programme language, you’ll form connections with like-minded people from around the globe. With no participation fee and the chance to explore the unique landscapes of Iceland, this experience offers both personal fulfilment and a meaningful contribution to conservation efforts.
