Marcus and Clare run an eco-lodge tourism business and an organic farm in south Donegal, in the north-west of Ireland. Having successfully established their business, they are now embarking on an exciting new project: building a family home using sustainable, natural construction methods. They are looking for enthusiastic helpers to join them at different stages of the build and gain practical experience along the way.
The house will be a single-storey, four-bedroom property featuring straw bale walls, cob interior walls, an earth floor and a grass-covered living roof. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in eco-building, natural materials and sustainable living. Previous building experience would be useful but is not essential, as a willingness to learn and get hands-on is what matters most.
Their family also runs an organic farm with a small herd of Dexter cattle, embracing a low-impact lifestyle in both their work and daily lives. Helpers will have the chance to experience life on a working farm while contributing to a meaningful project in a beautiful lakeside setting.
Tasks & Roles
Helpers will be involved in various stages of the natural building process, depending on the progress of the project. Much of the work will focus on constructing the internal cob walls and laying the earth floor, both of which involve traditional techniques and plenty of hands-on manual work.
This is an opportunity to learn practical natural building skills that could prove useful for future personal projects. The work can be physically demanding and often involves getting muddy, so a positive attitude, an interest in learning and an enjoyment of working as part of a team are important.
Living & Getting There
The eco-build is planned to take place during the winter and spring of 2027. The north-west of Ireland can be cold and wet at this time of year, so helpers should bring suitable clothing and footwear for working outdoors in changeable weather.
Accommodation is provided in a shared caravan. All meals are included on volunteering days, with lunches enjoyed together as a group. As Marcus and Clare have two young children, they also like to maintain family time, so helpers should not expect to share every evening meal. On days off, food and supplies will be provided so helpers can prepare their own meals.
The family lives in south Donegal. Ireland West Airport Knock is the closest airport, although international flight options are limited. Dublin Airport (DUB) and Belfast airports are alternative options. Buses operate from both Dublin and Belfast towards Donegal, and Marcus and Clare can arrange collection from either Ballyshannon or Donegal Town bus station, both approximately 20 minutes from the property.
What else
This opportunity would suit people who enjoy practical work, have a friendly and positive outlook and appreciate being part of a team. Helping to build a family home from the ground up is a rewarding experience, particularly for anyone interested in sustainable construction and alternative building methods.
There are around 90 acres of land to explore, along with quiet country lanes for walking and occasional trips to the local pub. The nearest towns are Donegal Town and Ballyshannon, both about a 20-minute drive away.
The property is in a rural and fairly isolated location, with no direct public transport, so helpers should take this into consideration when planning their stay.
