Volunteer in Vietnam: Teach English and Support Farming

Teach English & Support Sustainable Farming (Vietnam)

Immerse yourself in rural life and volunteer in Vietnam at our farm near Hoi An, where we run a community project combining organic farming with English education. My name is Ha, and I grew up in a small village in central Vietnam. Experiencing hardship firsthand, I was determined to create opportunities that would uplift my community and provide a better future for the next generation.

After completing my university studies in Vietnam, I spent over five years living and studying in different countries, including Israel, Singapore, and Denmark. During this time, I volunteered in agriculture and tourism in more than 20 countries, which gave me valuable insights into sustainable farming and education. In late 2021, I returned to my village to establish a project that combines organic farming with education, aiming to inspire the next generation to dream beyond their immediate surroundings.

The challenges in my village are significant. Many young people do not complete their education, believing it offers little benefit. They often find low-paying factory jobs, marry young, and struggle to provide for their families. Without guidance, their children grow up facing the same difficulties, perpetuating a cycle of hardship. My goal is to change this outlook by providing free English lessons and creating an environment where children feel encouraged to learn and explore new possibilities. I know that shifting mindsets is a long-term effort, possibly taking decades, which is why I need the support of volunteers to make a lasting impact.

Volunteer in Vietnam: Tasks & Roles

As a volunteer, you will play a key role in both our farming and educational efforts. Each day, you will help with two main tasks, working approximately 2-3 hours per day, up to a maximum of 15 hours per week. Responsibilities on the farm include gardening, looking after the animals, cleaning, and preparing traditional Vietnamese meals. We welcome volunteers with a positive attitude who enjoy working in a relaxed but purposeful environment.

Teaching English is another essential part of our project. You will assist in offering free English lessons to children from the village and nearby city, helping them build confidence and develop language skills. During the summer months, from June to August, we run special camps packed with activities.

If you have experience in social media or travel, we would love your input in developing ways to promote low-budget, authentic travel experiences in the village. Additionally, you can help with decorating the farm, creating a lively and welcoming space for both children and volunteers. Occasionally, you may also be asked to babysit my young son or organise games for the children who visit the farm.

We do not have fixed working days, allowing you to choose a day off to explore the local area. We value flexibility and positive energy, ensuring that every volunteer has an enjoyable and meaningful experience.

Volunteer in Vietnam: Living & Getting There

We are delighted to host you on our farm and in our home. You can choose to stay in our farmhouse, which has eight bunk beds, or camp in a tent if you prefer a more immersive outdoor experience. We also offer accommodation in an A-frame cabin or in our family home, which is a short 10-minute walk from the farm.

Your stay includes lunch and dinner, while breakfast is available at an affordable price in the nearby village. This is a great way to experience the local way of life and interact with villagers over a meal. As our farm is located in the countryside, the living conditions are simpler than what you might find in the city, so adaptability is important.

The farm, known as The Hygge Farm, is situated in Phu Tho, Que Son District, Quang Nam, Vietnam. We are 26km from Hoi An Ancient Town, 43km from My Son Sanctuary (a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site), 43km from Da Nang City, and 10km from a beautiful natural waterfall. The area is rich in cultural and natural attractions, making it a perfect place to explore when you are not working on the farm.

Volunteer in Vietnam: What Else

During your free time, you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the village, take walks around the farm, or visit nearby attractions. Hoi An’s ancient streets, My Son’s historic ruins, and a picturesque local waterfall are all within easy reach. You can also experience the unique flavours of the region by trying dishes such as Salt Coffee (15,000 VND), Bánh Mì (10,000 VND), and Quang Noodles. The local market offers fresh, inexpensive fruit, and you are welcome to join in community activities such as volleyball with the locals or cracking rice crackers with friends.

Please note that English lessons do not take place during Tet or the rainy season due to public holidays.

Over the past three years, we have welcomed over 300 volunteers from different parts of the world, and we deeply appreciate their contributions. To honour their efforts, we have a memorial wall where we display photos of those who have helped shape our project.

We do not seek to profit from volunteers. Your contributions help cover essential living costs and food expenses, ensuring the farm can continue its work. Whether you have skills in farming, teaching, or simply a passion for sustainable living and education, we would love to have you join us in building a brighter future for our community.
