HippoHelp was founded by Leopold Huber in 2017 as a work exchange platform designed to connect travellers with hosts offering food and accommodation in exchange for help. It featured an intuitive, map-based interface, making it easier to find volunteer opportunities worldwide.
Leopold, a Swedish entrepreneur, created the platform during his time in Guilin, China, while developing a small piece of land with his wife. The platform grew out of their need for extra help with their vegetable-growing project.
In January 2025, HelpStay Ltd acquired HippoHelp.com domain and trademark. HippoHelp was discontinued in its previous form and all users were notified by email about the transition.
Under HelpStay’s stewardship, the spirit of the original HippoHelp platform endures, allowing travellers to explore the world and make a positive impact. Today, it showcases a selection of the latest volunteering opportunities from the HelpStay platform.
