The town, renowned for its waves and the venue for the 2021 Surfing Olympics, attracts surfers of all levels, from beginners to experts. With a lively high season and a tranquil off-season, Ichinomiya offers a dynamic and enriching experience for those who love the ocean and international exchange.
Surf Volunteer Japan: Tasks & Roles
We divide our work into two main teams: the guesthouse and the restaurant teams. Guesthouse duties include facility cleaning, assisting with check-ins and check-outs, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere. Volunteers may also help with social media marketing or lend their unique skills to enhance operations.
The restaurant team focuses on kitchen assistance, bartending, and maintaining the dining area. Schedules vary, with shifts adjusted according to weekday and weekend needs. Volunteers may also host events, parties, or other creative initiatives to engage guests. Working hours typically range between 5–6 hours daily, totalling 25–30 hours a week, with flexibility based on seasonal demands.
Surf Volunteer Japan: Living & Getting There
Accommodation is in shared dormitory-style rooms, with separate spaces for men and women, and can house up to seven people. Private rooms are available for long-term residents upon request. The facility is designed to foster community, attracting visitors and volunteers from around the globe. Meals are generally provided in the evenings on weekdays and for lunch and dinner on weekends and holidays. Additional weekday lunches may occasionally be offered.
Ichinomiya is conveniently located just an hour from Tokyo, making it easy to explore the city’s cultural attractions. Narita International Airport (NRT) is the nearest airport, approximately 60 kilometres away, while Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) is another viable option for domestic travellers. Both airports are well-connected to the region by train and bus.
Surf Volunteer Japan: What Else
Volunteers enjoy complimentary access to surfboards, skateboards, the skate park, training gym, sauna, and other amenities. Surfing enthusiasts can take advantage of free board rentals, though repairs for damages are the user’s responsibility. Wetsuits are available if your size is in stock, or you can purchase one locally. The surf skate park offers an excellent opportunity to refine your balance and technique, complementing your time in the waves.
Long-term residents staying for over two months receive special benefits and may arrange extended holidays by combining their days off. Beyond work, the local area offers a range of leisure activities, including fishing, golf, and exploring nearby cultural hubs like Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. Whether it’s connecting with past volunteers or engaging with Japanese entertainment, there’s always something to discover.
Our facility is more than a workplace; it’s a hub for surfers, sea lovers, and international friends. Whether you’re improving your surfing skills, making memories at beachside barbecues, or soaking up the serene beauty of the off-season, Ichinomiya promises an unforgettable experience.
