The Pirate Haus Inn offers travellers the chance to volunteer as a pirate in the heart of historic downtown St. Augustine, Florida. The property has six private rooms and one hostel-style dormitory. Volunteers typically stay for one to three months, following a one-week trial period to ensure the arrangement suits everyone. In exchange for a few hours of help each morning, volunteers have plenty of free time to explore St. Augustine and enjoy free VIP access to selected local attractions.
Tasks & Roles
The main responsibilities involve basic housekeeping, including changing beds, cleaning toilets and keeping shared areas tidy. Working hours are generally from 9:30 am until noon, although the daily workload usually takes around two hours to complete.
The ideal person to volunteer as a pirate is quick to learn, dependable and responsible, with a friendly and positive attitude towards guests, children and other staff. Previous experience of living in shared accommodation is preferred. Volunteers should also be comfortable with basic cleaning, know how to use common cleaning equipment and be willing to clean up after themselves.
Living & Getting There
Volunteers share a bunk room and have access to a fully equipped kitchen, which is regularly stocked with pancakes and spaghetti. There is also a shared lounge with a television and Netflix, a computer, a rooftop patio and free Wi-Fi.
The Pirate Haus Inn is located at 32 Treasury Street, St. Augustine, Florida 32084, USA, in the historic city centre. The closest airport is Northeast Florida Regional Airport (SGJ).
St. Augustine is also served by Greyhound buses, which stop at the parking garage on W Castillo Drive and Cordova Street. The inn is around four blocks south of the bus stop. Jacksonville is approximately one hour away by car, while Orlando takes around two hours. Miami is about four hours away by car, although travelling by bus can take considerably longer.
What else
After the morning’s work is completed, volunteers are free from around noon onwards to explore the city, visit local attractions or seek additional employment if they wish. The inn provides a list of free VIP attraction access, giving those who volunteer as a pirate an opportunity to discover more of St. Augustine during their stay.
