Nestled in a charming hamlet on the edge of Bodmin Moor, beside the serene River Lynher, lies a 160-year-old cottage undergoing restoration. The owner, a creative and adventurous individual, has spent the past three years reviving this historic home and is eager to welcome helpers interested in learning traditional crafts. This is a unique chance to learn stonework and limework skills while living amidst beautiful natural surroundings steeped in history.
Learn Stonework: Tasks & Roles
Much of the renovation has been completed, but there are still tasks to be done, including carpentry, lime rendering, pointing, and, notably, stonework. While prior building experience is a bonus, it is not essential; what matters most is a willingness to learn, work with care, and enjoy the process. Help with garden maintenance and fencing is also welcomed. For those interested, there are additional activities such as horse riding, assisting with the preparation of a small yacht, and occasional fishing trips. Work will sometimes be done alongside the host, though there will also be opportunities to work independently while the host focuses on travel journalism.
Learn Stonework: Living & Getting There
Accommodation is provided in a cosy cottage featuring two bedrooms and beautiful vaulted ceilings, with guests having their own private room. The location offers easy access to the stunning moorlands and both the north and south coasts, approximately 30 to 40 minutes away. The nearest airport is Cornwall Airport Newquay (NQY), and the host can arrange collection from there, as well as from Liskeard train or bus stations. Life here combines peaceful early mornings, warm hospitality, creative conversations, and relaxed evenings by log fires or barbecues. There are also chances to join local activities such as dance classes or cinema visits.
Learn Stonework: What Else
This opportunity is more than just a work exchange—it’s a chance to truly learn stonework and other traditional skills in a tranquil setting surrounded by nature. The riverside footpath opposite the cottage invites refreshing dips, and the large wild garden offers space to unwind or help with outdoor projects. The host values honesty, respect, and kindness, fostering a welcoming environment where guests can choose to join adventures or enjoy peaceful solitude. Whether you come to share in the work or the calm, this experience promises creativity, connection, and a deep appreciation for heritage craft.
