For those looking to volunteer in Peru, this unique opportunity in Cusco offers the chance to make a lasting impact in early childhood development. As the city’s first English-speaking kindergarten, this pioneering initiative supports bilingual education for children from non-English-speaking families, giving them the tools to access broader educational and life opportunities. Led by Boris Santos, a dedicated development professional with over two decades of experience working with Andean communities and international organisations, this project addresses deeper societal challenges through education, language immersion, and health-focused early intervention.
Volunteer in Peru: Tasks & Roles
Volunteers play a key role in creating a fully immersive English-speaking environment for children aged 2 to 7. The greatest need is in the classroom of the youngest group—two-year-olds—although support in all age groups is valued. Each class has its own teacher, but volunteers are crucial for ensuring personalised attention and fostering natural language learning. Daily responsibilities include supporting classroom activities, encouraging interaction in English, maintaining a clean and safe space, and helping with hygiene routines like toilet training or changing nappies when necessary.
Mealtimes and recess are particularly important, and volunteers are expected to help monitor the children to ensure their safety and well-being. While the work can be demanding at times, it is deeply fulfilling, and volunteers are truly making a difference in the foundational years of a child’s life. This role is ideal for those who are passionate about education, child development, and making a positive impact while they volunteer in Peru.
Volunteer in Peru: Living & Getting There
To support those who choose to volunteer in Peru with this project, a dedicated volunteer apartment has been secured just four blocks from the kindergarten. The apartment, located in one of Cusco’s safest and most scenic neighbourhoods, is equipped with hot water, a full kitchen, living and dining areas, and comfortable shared bedrooms. It houses up to five volunteers and one permanent teacher and offers panoramic views of the city.
Nearby amenities include supermarkets and traditional food markets, and the historic city centre is just a short walk away. The location is also well connected, with Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport just 10–15 minutes away by taxi, and a bus terminal within walking distance. Airport or bus terminal pick-up can be arranged for a modest fee.
Volunteer in Peru: What Else
Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one month, which allows time to understand the routines and build meaningful relationships with the children. In return, volunteers receive accommodation and two meals per working day. Four volunteer positions are available every two months, with enrolment typically happening at the start and end of each month. However, applicants are encouraged to inquire throughout the year, as occasional openings may arise.
To ensure the safety of all children, prospective volunteers must provide a Criminal Record Check, travel insurance details, an emergency contact, and relevant contact information. This project also goes beyond language immersion by tackling a critical issue in Peru: childhood anaemia. With a unique anti-anaemia programme and a strong focus on nutrition, values, and self-esteem, the school’s mission is to build a healthier, more educated generation ready to change their communities and the world.
If you’re passionate about education, language learning, and contributing to a meaningful cause, this is your chance to volunteer in Peru and be part of a transformative journey.
