Fair Tourism and Local Life in Nepal

Experience Fair Tourism and Local Life (Nepal)

This family-run guest house in Dhulikhel offers travellers the chance to experience everyday life in Nepal while learning about local culture and fair tourism. Set in a scenic area with mountain views and a traditional town atmosphere, the project supports rural communities through organic farming and efforts to improve local living standards.

The hosts are keen to share their knowledge of Nepali culture, agriculture and local life with visitors. They also arrange visits to nearby rural communities, giving volunteers a chance to learn about traditional farming and experience a slower pace of life.

Tasks & Roles

Volunteers help with the day-to-day running of the guest house for around three to four hours a day, from Sunday to Thursday. Tasks can include cooking, cleaning, gardening and general work around the property. There are also regular opportunities to use personal skills and knowledge to improve the accommodation and support other volunteers.

Visits to rural communities form part of the experience, where volunteers can learn about organic farming and take part in agricultural activities. There may also be opportunities to visit local community schools and help children with English and art.

Those with digital or social media experience can assist with computer and internet-related tasks. Volunteers are also welcome to make use of the organic garden and contribute to the project’s focus on sustainable living and mutual support.

Living & Getting There

Volunteers stay in the guest house in shared rooms, with two beds per room. A shared, fully equipped kitchen is available, and guests can prepare their own meals using vegetables from the organic garden. The accommodation provides three meals each day, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. A coffee shop is located nearby, while local shops and restaurants offer a range of food, including vegetarian and vegan choices.

The guest house is around 30 kilometres from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. From central Kathmandu, buses from Ratnapark take approximately two hours to reach Dhulikhel. A private airport or city pick-up can also be arranged on request for USD 30.

The accommodation is about a 15-minute walk from Dhulikhel town centre, making it easy to access local shops, restaurants and other facilities. The contribution for accommodation and meals is €7 per person per day.

What else

Fridays and Saturdays are free, giving volunteers plenty of time to explore Dhulikhel and the surrounding area. There are several nearby walking and hiking routes, including Dhulikhel Kali Temple, Namobuddha Monastery, the heritage town of Panauti and the viewpoint at Nagarkot. Kathmandu and Bhaktapur can also be visited for their historic sites and ancient monuments.

During their stay, volunteers can practise yoga and meditation and experience healing therapies offered by an experienced practitioner. The project provides an opportunity to slow down, experience Nepali hospitality and gain a better understanding of rural life and local traditions.

Volunteers are encouraged to share their skills and ideas, as there are always ways to improve the accommodation and project. Voluntary contributions towards food supplies and the ongoing maintenance of the project are also appreciated.
