Volunteer in Cambodia: Teach English & Experience Village Life

Teach English & Experience Village Life (Cambodia)

This programme invites individuals who wish to volunteer in Cambodia to support a rural school near Siem Reap. The school, founded by Pagna, focuses on providing children with the tools and knowledge to break the cycle of poverty through education. Volunteers help expand the school’s reach by teaching English, supporting community initiatives, and assisting with extra lessons. The opportunity offers a unique insight into Cambodian village life, blending educational work with cultural immersion.

Volunteer in Cambodia: Tasks & Roles

Volunteers who choose to volunteer in Cambodia primarily assist with teaching English, covering levels from beginners learning the alphabet to more advanced students. Classes take place in the morning, afternoon, and evening, with additional opportunities to engage children through games and conversational practice. No prior teaching experience is required, though those with TEFL certification or skills in fundraising, web development, child development, or business management are especially valued. Volunteers typically commit to at least one week, with longer stays preferred, and receive a certificate of participation that can support future teaching roles.

Volunteer in Cambodia: Living & Getting There

Accommodation for volunteers is provided in traditional Cambodian huts on stilts, each with a bed, mattress, pillow, mosquito net, and fan. Shared bathrooms and bathing areas use rainwater, offering an authentic experience of village life. Two home-cooked meals are provided daily, with breakfast including tea, coffee, and bread, and vegetarian options available. The schools are located roughly 30 kilometres from Siem Reap, approximately a 30–50 minute tuk-tuk ride. Transport can be arranged for a small fee, and volunteers may use bicycles to move between the school and nearby areas. A local SIM card is recommended for mobile coverage, and Wi-Fi is available at the school, though it may be intermittent. While teaching, volunteers are asked to wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, with more casual attire permitted during free time.

Volunteer in Cambodia: What else

Volunteering in Cambodia offers far more than classroom experience. Participants immerse themselves in village life, exploring rice fields, coconut groves, and waterways, and enjoying local sunrise and sunset spots. There are opportunities for boat tours of floating villages, cultural exchanges with local families, and social interaction with fellow volunteers. Up to eight volunteers are hosted at a time, providing a supportive and engaging environment. A small daily contribution covers meals and accommodation, helping ensure the school can continue providing free education to its students while allowing volunteers to fully participate in the life of the community.
