On the tranquil Danish island of Falster, a unique and evolving spiritual retreat is taking shape in the form of Halskov Monastery. Managed by Anders (known to many as Andy), this former farmhouse is gradually transforming into a contemporary ashram—welcoming those interested in yoga, meditation, philosophy, and communal living. Inspired by principles such as Karma Yoga, Hatha Yoga, and Yoga Nidra, the space offers a peaceful environment for personal exploration, reflection, and meaningful connections. The vision for Halskov Monastery is long-term and rooted in simplicity, balance, and shared intention. For anyone seeking to volunteer in a monastery, this project offers a unique chance to be part of its foundational chapter.
Volunteer in a Monastery: Tasks & Roles
Volunteers are invited to contribute to the early development of this inspiring initiative. Most of the tasks revolve around gardening—preparing the soil, planting, and general outdoor upkeep—as spring is a particularly active season. Renovation and maintenance work on the farmhouse is also underway, including work on an external wall and the traditional practice of lime-washing the remaining buildings. In addition to these practical tasks, assistance with spreading awareness about the project is greatly appreciated. Those with a knack for photography or social media are encouraged to contribute creatively by capturing the spirit of the place or developing simple promotional strategies. Occasional house cleaning may also be part of the daily rhythm. Each volunteer is expected to offer 3–4 hours of help per day, five days a week, in exchange for accommodation, meals, and a rich cultural and personal exchange. While the atmosphere is relaxed and unpressured, a willingness to integrate yoga or meditation into one’s daily routine is welcomed and encouraged.
Volunteer in a Monastery: Living & Getting There
Volunteers are accommodated in one of three private rooms, two of which contain double beds. Unless arranged otherwise, each guest will have their own room to ensure comfort and privacy. The food provided is homemade, organic, and vegan, often supplemented by fresh produce from a nearby organic shop located roughly 4 kilometres away. The farmhouse is situated beside the serene Fortidsminde Forest, and just a short walk or cycle leads to another vast woodland area that stretches alongside the coast. The peaceful surroundings offer a wonderful opportunity to unwind and connect with nature. The property is equipped with reliable internet and even a ping pong table for some light-hearted fun. Transport to and from Nykøbing Falster—around 17 km away—can be arranged. Public buses also serve the nearby village of Meelse, and onward travel connections are available from both Copenhagen and northern Germany. For those needing help with route planning, Anders is happy to assist.
Volunteer in a Monastery: What Else
The monastery is entirely non-profit and functions as a communal, open-minded space where people can explore mindful living without financial barriers. Whether you’re seeking a brief retreat or considering a longer-term stay to be part of the monastery’s growth, all contributions are welcomed with gratitude. Anders is especially interested in connecting with people who feel aligned with the project’s ethos and may be open to returning or staying for extended periods. There are no rigid expectations or prerequisites, only a shared respect for the environment, each other, and the process of building something meaningful together. If you’ve been searching for a chance to volunteer in a monastery and immerse yourself in a slower, more intentional lifestyle, this may be the perfect opportunity.
