Volunteer on an Irish Farm – Rural Life and Care for Animals

Volunteer on a Farm and Care for Animals (Ireland)

Tucked away in the scenic countryside of western Ireland, our small hobby farm offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by rolling green fields and stunning sunrises and sunsets. Home to a variety of animals, including ponies, a donkey, cows, sheep, pygmy goats, llamas, poultry, and even a few reptiles, the farm is always full of life. Right now, it’s an especially exciting time as we welcome newborns, with baby goats, lambs, chicks, and ducklings joining our growing family. If you’re looking to volunteer on an Irish farm, this is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in rural life, care for animals, and experience the charm of the west of Ireland.

Volunteer on an Irish Farm: Tasks & Roles

We are looking for help with the daily care of our animals, which includes feeding, providing fresh water, cleaning enclosures, and ensuring their overall well-being. Some of the youngest animals may need bottle-feeding, offering a hands-on experience in their early development.

Beyond animal care, there are always projects to tackle around the farm. We are currently constructing new enclosures, repairing existing structures, and giving certain areas a fresh coat of paint. We also take part in fairs and heritage days, bringing some of our animals along to these lively events. If you join us during these times, you’ll have the chance to experience a traditional Irish fair, browse local crafts, and meet a variety of people.

Volunteer on an Irish Farm: Living & Getting There

Our farm is situated just outside Kiltimagh, making it easy to visit the town and explore the surrounding area. We have two bicycles available if you’d like to venture out and enjoy the countryside at your own pace. Accommodation is in shared rooms, each containing two beds, though depending on how many helpers are staying, you might have a room to yourself. We provide all necessary bedding, towels, and toiletries, and you will have your own bathroom.

For those arriving by air, the nearest airport is Ireland West Airport Knock, and we are happy to arrange a pick-up. If you are flying into Dublin, a reliable bus service (22) runs to Swinford, where we can meet you. If you are travelling from another part of Ireland, we can help you find the best route, as we are well connected by bus services from Galway and Sligo.

Volunteer on an Irish Farm: What Else

A typical week involves 25 to 30 hours of work, with two days off for you to explore and travel as you wish. Weekends are our busiest time due to fair days, so extra hands are particularly valuable then. If you’d like more than two days off at a time to go further afield, we can be flexible and arrange that with you.
