This Vegan animal sanctuary volunteer opportunity offers the chance to become part of a compassionate community dedicated to rescuing farmed animals and providing them with a safe, permanent home. Founded in 2011 by Laura Luengo, the sanctuary was created to protect animals who had been rejected by society and give them the opportunity to live freely and peacefully.
Located near Madrid, the sanctuary promotes a cruelty-free lifestyle and encourages a deeper understanding of animals as sentient beings with their own personalities, emotions and needs. Volunteers live alongside rescued animals and like-minded people from different backgrounds who share a commitment to kindness, empathy and ending animal exploitation.
The programme is designed for people who genuinely wish to support animal care and sanctuary life. It is best suited to volunteers who want to contribute their time and energy to helping the animals rather than simply seeking accommodation or a travel experience.
Vegan Animal Sanctuary Volunteer: Tasks & Roles
Volunteers support the daily care of the sanctuary residents by helping with essential activities that protect their health, comfort and wellbeing. Responsibilities include preparing food, assisting with feeding routines, maintaining hygiene standards and keeping animal living areas clean and safe.
Depending on the needs of the animals, volunteers may also help move residents between shelters and outdoor areas, provide support during illness or recovery, and assist with creating a calm and secure environment for each animal.
As the sanctuary continues to develop, volunteers may also contribute to practical improvement projects around the site. These can include painting, small repairs, carpentry, assembling equipment and helping to adapt spaces for the animals and future visitors.
Vegan Animal Sanctuary Volunteer: Living & Getting There
Volunteers stay in shared accommodation within the sanctuary grounds. The volunteer house includes shared bedrooms, a bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, a living area, a terrace and a garden, providing a comfortable space to relax after daily tasks.
Food is not included, so volunteers are responsible for preparing their own meals. As the sanctuary follows a fully vegan philosophy, all food, cosmetics, clothing and personal products brought onto the property must respect the sanctuary’s animal-friendly values. Products containing animal-derived ingredients or tested on animals are not permitted.
The nearest airport is Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD). From the airport, volunteers can travel to Atocha Station by bus, train or metro. From there, they can continue by Metro Line 10 or the C-5 train towards Cuatro Vientos Station, followed by bus 551 towards San Martín de Valdeiglesias. The sanctuary team will collect volunteers from this town.
Vegan Animal Sanctuary Volunteer: What else
A stay as a Vegan animal sanctuary volunteer provides a meaningful opportunity to connect with rescued animals, learn about their individual needs and take part in a lifestyle centred around compassion and respect.
The sanctuary prioritises safety, education and teamwork, offering guidance and support throughout the volunteer experience. By following the sanctuary’s vegan principles, volunteers help maintain a peaceful environment where rescued animals can live with dignity, care and freedom.
