Volunteer Help in 20 acres of Gardens

  • Marker details
  • DescriptionHi,
My name is Fiona and I am the owner and designer of Green Island Gardens, 20 acres of gardens set up in a way that there is always something to see and obviously to do!
I am looking for some extra help in the gardens, wether you are an experienced gardener, carpenter, horticulturalist, or you are willing to learn and to work and can bring any other skill into the garden I will be more than happy to welcome you to our little team! I will also need help with the Garden entrance and tea room, as well as house keeping, it really depends on the month and the visits we have. We already have people working here, you will be supporting them.

You will be working 5 hours a day 5 days a week, and in exchange you will get accommodation - a cabin house with cooking facilities, fridge, shower, washing machine, central heating and wifi. I can not offer food on a daily basis, but we will have a meal together sometimes!
The cabin house you get will be shared with other volunteers, it has a double bed in one room, and 2 single beds in another room.
If you are a couple only, you will have the cabin all for yourselves! It can also be 2 friends, 1 person... anything up to 4 people, considering that there is a double bed.

Things that are needed to do in the gardens:
It depends on the time of the year, but mostly weeding, strimming, watering, pruning, helping in the nursery.

Things to help with the business and tearoom:
Welcoming the guests, taking orders from the tearoom, prepare drinks and light lunches.

Things to help in the house:
    General cleaning.

Other things / skills that I am happy to welcome:
    Carpenter, or surprise me!

I would prefer a minimum stay is 3 months, but we can talk about what suits you best. You are welcome to stay for longer, and if you can't stay for 3 months we can also get to an agreement.

I am very flexible, we are a small team with a friendly attitude towards what we do, we love to create a great experience for our customers, even more these times where activities and social things are limited. The gardens offer a unique space where people can enjoy feeling completely safe. As a team, we love to have people around and new energy, ideas and inputs, so we will be very happy to welcome you!

    About the area:
We are in Ardleigh, Essex, only 10 minutes from Colchester, Britain's first city. Ipswich and Chelmsford are the other 2 nearest cities. London is only 45 minutes by train! We are also very close to the sea. From the pastoral fields of Constable Country to the Essex coast at Mersea Island there's plenty of the great outdoors to discover in and around Colchester. The beaches, nature reserves and wildlife parks that span the borough are fantastic spots to take a walk on a nature trail, get away from it all, or simply to get a flavour of the unique landscapes and wildlife habitats that Essex has to offer. The Norfolk coast is also relatively nearby, offering other places of natural beauty. Ask me anything you want to know!

    A little bit about me...
I am a great believer in fate, and as such I know that it was always my destiny to end up at Green Island. Like my farmer father, I know that we are only on this earth for a short time and can only be considered as guardians of the land. Over the last twenty years I have been lucky enough to be able to indulge my passion for my love of plants as well as create the garden of my dreams, and it gives me enormous pleasure and satisfaction now to be able to share it with others.
Whether you are a plantaholic, a lover of wildlife, an avid birdwatcher, a student of horticulture or garden design, all or none of the above, I hope that your experience of Green Island leaves you feeling enriched. I never set out for it to be a therapy or cure for my illness however without a doubt it has had a large part to play in my recovery and I hope also some of its healing spirituality can now be passed on to anyone in need who visits the gardens.

In the family house you will meet me (Fiona), Andy (my husband), and my 6 children (if they are in the area during your period of work). You will also meet and work with Bo and Lola (the dogs of the house), and with Tinie, Panda and Lily (the three lady cats of the house).
Matt and Maria are working full time onsite, and we have some other volunteers coming some days during the week.

I am looking forward to hearing from you!
