Raw Vegan Community and Fruit Farm

  • Marker details
  • DescriptionKanekiki is a low-fat, raw vegan* community and organic fruit farm on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Our fruit forest hosts many varieties of tropical fruit trees. We are working toward full food sustainability, and though we have a long way to go, we are learning day by day how to best foster growth in this tropical environment.

Farm work activities include harvesting, propagation, land maintenance, construction, gardening and more. Most of the work we do is physical in nature and we appreciate visitors who are ready to get their hands dirty or have specific handy skills. However, no previous farming or physical labour experience is required.

We offer several options for staying with us which allow for different focuses and varying lengths of stay. Our Work Trade program commitment is from 3-6 months, and involves around 4 hours hard labour 5 days a week. The length of stay is somewhat flexible for our Work Trade program, especially for over-seas travelers who can only obtain a 3 month visa.

You can read all about us and fill out an online application on our website. Please send us a message to receive our website URL. Once we receive your application, we will be in touch with you. Feel free to reach out to us through wwoof or through our website anytime.

We are located in the Puna district of the Big Island. We have ocean access, hiking and some beautiful places to explore with walking distance of the farm. Other tourist attractions in the area include Volcanoes National Park, black sand beaches and viewing of the recent lava flow. We are 10 miles from the nearest small town, Pahoa and about 30 miles from Hilo, one of the larger cities on the Island and the city most of our visitors fly into.

The heart of Kanekiki is community. We aim to cultivate a supportive environment of authentic expression giving each of us a sense of belonging. We often meet outside of work hours to deepen our connections with one another and also to simply have fun venturing the island, planning movie nights and playing games. Together we aim to create, work, play, and live in harmony with each other and with nature.

*While we do not consume any animal products on the farm, not everyone visiting fully embraces a vegan ethic.*

  • Hours per day We usually have a work schedule of four hours a day, five days a week.
  • Work requirements: Our community is strictly drug and alcohol free, we welcome visitors who are also living a clean and sober lifestyle. By ‘clean and sober’ we mean without consuming Tobacco, Alcohol, Marijuana (medical or recreational), Ayahuasca, Magic Mushrooms, Prescription Drugs (when not prescribed or misused), LSD, Speed, Heroin, Cocaine, Meth Amphetamines and any other mind altering substance. We ask that all of our visitors make a verbal agreement with us to remain ‘clean and sober’ throughout the duration of their stay with us.

If you currently enjoy using any of these substances regularly, and have no interest in abstaining from them, then Kanekiki is probably not the right fit for you at this time.

If you enjoy living life without the use of these substances, and are willing to consume a plant based diet while you are with us, you’ll likely love Kanekiki.

  • Has pets? We have three dogs and three cats living with us on the farm. Two are rescue dogs and one gets nervous around certain people, but spends most of his time with his owner and is generally very friendly. Our furry friends love attention from our visitors.
  • Smokes at home? No
  • Accommodation: Accommodations at Kanekiki are bali style huts, usually shared between several people. We do have options for couples wanting a private room. Though there is no running water or electricity in the huts, we do have access to both in our community areas. We have an outdoor community kitchen and an indoor community hang-out space. Kanekiki is completely off-grid, so we try to be aware of our resources and careful to use them wisely.

We have a large multipurpose room that serves as a hang out space, workspace, dinning room, movie theatre, yoga space and meeting place for our weekly gatherings.

Our kitchen is a typical outdoor kitchen — minus any cooking facilities. The kitchen and community house both have electricity and running water. Our community kitchen is equipped with refrigerators, a Vita Mix blender, a food processor, various juicers for fruit and veg, dehydrators and everything you’ll need for making day-to-day delicious raw vegan meals.
