Ohio's Amish Country

  • Marker details
  • DescriptionI own a private home and guest house on three rural acres in the middle of Ohio's beautiful Amish country surrounded by Amish farms, winding country roads, and lots of people traveling by horse and buggy, not to mention numerous bakeries and cheese houses! It's a gorgeous popular tourist area, even just to take lovely drives or order takeout from one of the many restaurants. We're less than two hours from Cleveland, Columbus, and Pittsburgh.

Normally, when it's not COVID, I love hosting people from all over the world in my house and, during the warmer months, in tents and campers on the property. With COVID, this will be a no-contact stay, so if you've been wanting to travel with a work-stay but want to stay COVID safe, here's your chance!

I'm in the process of renovating a rustic, peaceful cabin in the woods and am seeking people who would be willing to contribute their knowledge and labor in cleaning, construction, electrical, plumbing, painting, sanding, staining, clearing brush, cutting down trees, gardening, landscaping, roofing, installing solar panels, and other miscellaneous skills in exchange for accommodations in that same cabin. There is also electrical and water hookup for a van or RV within 100 feet of the cabin. I will provide all tools and materials necessary to complete each task.

I normally love meeting new people, but during COVID, I'm maintaining social distancing. The cabin can accommodate two people who will stay apart from the people in the house and log hours and progress remotely daily. I'm looking for people who can help with day-to-day tasks (gardening, cleaning, weeding, taking trash to the curb) as well as big projects (painting, putting in a shower, installing a composting toilet, mending/moving fences, clearing brush, staining, roofing, electrical, installing solar panels, miscellaneous tasks)-- especially people who can be flexible and self-directed.

For smaller projects, the ideal tenant would work a certain number of hours during their time on the property. For bigger construction projects, the perfect tenant would complete the project at the beginning of the stay, and spend the rest of their time relaxing and enjoying the comforts the rustic but beautiful location has to offer. I want to work with you to provide a fair amount of time at a rustic getaway in exchange for your labor and expertise.

Living spaces consist of a private 600sf cabin that sits in the woods about 1000 feet from the main house and/or electric/water hookup for an RV or van.

Because of COVID, I will not be providing food or meal sharing. The cabin has a gas stove, gas refrigerator, basic cooking utensils, and running water. The cabin is less than a 15-minute drive from groceries, gas stations, restaurants, bakeries, post offices, farm stands, and laundromats. It has a natural-gas heater, a queen-sized bed, dining table and chairs, and covered porch. There is a bathtub with running water on the covered porch and a composting toilet in the cabin.

I welcome helpers from all walks of life, meaning that we are LGBTQIA+ inclusive, as well as inclusive of all races, ethnicities, nationalities, and religions.
