Help on traditional wooden sailing boat

  • Marker details
  • DescriptionHello, my name is Christoph. I am from Germany and operate a traditional wooden sailing boat here in Langkawi Malaysia.

Langkawi is a well known holiday destination in Malaysia, an archipelago of 99 islands at the edge of the Andaman Sea, 60 SM north of Penang. The island is covered with virgin rainforest, good for trekking, watersport (exept for diving) and bird watching. Eagles and hornbills are abundant and occasionally we see groups of dolphins, even in harbour.

The boat I am running is quite unique as it is a traditional Malay wooden junk schooner of almost 100 feet and the only one of her kind for charter in Malaysia. I had a very very similar boat built in the 80ies and sailed it round the world. This Malaysian boat is built in an archaic technique with wooden dowels and caulking bark. The art of building these boats is rapidly dying out and very few masters have still been practising this skill on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Since December 2018, the boat is moored in front of the hotel for which it will be running until the high season will end in April. This is an opportunity to live on board, go out sailing almost on a daily base and gain some knowledge on what life on a wooden sailing boat is all about. Caution: short term helpers do not need to apply, the skipper expects the helpers to stay on after their training. Minimum stay is one to two month after a trial period of a week or so to get to know each other and find out if it is enjoyable for all involved to live and work together in the enclosed environment of a sailing boat.

I am always looking forward to share his knowledge with one or two helpers and teach them how to run and maintain a classic wooden boat in return for their help in running the show. The boat is sitting in a beautiful bay off the beach of this 5 star hotel on a very strong mooring and will work for that hotel exclusively. This bay is far off the beaten track with the hotel sitting in a lovely piece of virgin jungle (eagles and all), tucked in between the trees and can not even be spotted from the sea at all. Very picturesque setting! The hotel does the catering, sends the guests to the boat and captain and crew manouver the boat, operate the sails, entertain the guests and keep the boat clean. A steward and a cook serving the guests during a trip are supplied by the hotel. In case you like to stay long time on board and help, check it out!
