Bake and Bake - Bakery & Guesthouse

  • Marker details
  • DescriptionHi we are Kristin (from Iceland) and Adrian (from UK) we came to Otres Village, Cambodia after many years living in New York City, and we fell in love with the people and place. We love it so much that we have been here almost 3 years now!

We have opened a Bakery project and guesthouse right here in the village, minutes walk away from Otres Beach.

Our main business is our packaged soft baked cookies that are sold around Cambodia, these are made each morning by our Cambodian staff. Our Cambodia kitchen crew; Srey Roat, Srey Mach, Srey Yura and YeYe - they come in early in the morning before most of us wake up and are done baking by our breakfast time. The kitchen is full of packaged cookies and our Cambodian manager Mr Sambat arrives and starts to ship out the cookies to our distribution staff, including Cambodian Mr Pach in Siem Reap.
In our two years of operation we are happy to have created jobs for 6 Cambodian people.

We also have a Cooking / Baking exchange, where if volunteers have particular dishes or items that they want to demonstrate then they are welcome to do so. Perhaps these will be popular items in the future and we would then teach the Cambodian staff how to make!
We also encourage group meals where chefs and food lovers share recipes from their diverse cultures.

We encourage our volunteers to be a self-managing collective, where the work schedule, days off, and responsibilities can be decided by the group.

If volunteers have cooking / baking skills we are happy to have them cook our family meals (sometimes we are 10 volunteers) and even add to our menu! If you want to learn baking skills we will let you practice after the kitchen is finished for the day.
However please be prepared to undertake general maintenance and cleaning tasks.

We also run a motorbike exchange, "Win Win Situation" as travelers often arrive by motorbike from Vietnam or Laos and leave us their bikes and we fix them up for use around the village or for new arrivals who may take them out of the country when they leave. We can provide you and teach you to ride a manual motorbike.

It is a lot of fun and a great way to meet people, to work with travelers and locals alike as we have a Khmer staff sharing work with our volunteers.

Any leftover unsold baked items we ask our volunteers to distribute among the local families in the Village, or to our local school, Shine Cambodia, an NGO that we work with.

Southern Cambodia is undergoing transition at the moment and our village is seeing increased construction these days however once we are sitting at the beach or boating to a nearby island, life is still wonderful.

Update: Otres is 15 minutes from Sihanoukville, a city experiencing major changes due to the influx of Chinese development.
Our distance form town helps to keep Otres less developed however there are some large hotels now being built.

The good news is that the beach is beautiful, and many of the progressive and artistic businesses are staying in Otres so we think it going to be a great season.

If you love baking we let you practice your skills in our bakery oven, we can share the results in our communal meals.
People people - we will have some guest rooms this season so meeting and greeting / hospitality experience would be useful.
We need help with the maintenance of our building and garden.
General building / carpentry / electrical/ plumbing skills would be great. We are building decks and walkways right now.
If you are handy with mechanics we have a fleet of motorbikes in various states of repair - we lend these out to our volunteers.
Outgoing upbeat volunteers can help promote our project by talking to customers on our Snack Wagon.
Any chefs who would like to suggest their creations to us and help feed our whole crew would be welcomed.
We organize group boat trips to the nearby island, Koh ta kiev.

Shared room (max 2 people per cabin) with wifi, fan.Pillows mattress and bed-sheets towels etc

Access to kitchen to cook own meals when kitchen is not busy. Local breakfast provided and coffee and baked goods everyday!

Visiting the local village to distribute excess food items.
Taking products to local school - all excess cookies etc are sent here and volunteers will visit the school
Opportunity to learn Khmer language with our staff, our Manager Mr.Sambat speaks English and is happy to teach you some basic Khmer Language.
How to source local products and interact with local Khmer vendors.
You can learn how to ride a manual motorbike as we will provide motorbike when needed.
Basic motorbike maintenance skills can be learnt at our bike exchange.
The fundamentals of baking can also be taught.
We provide breakfast at the local family restaurant located next to our place, you can enjoy typical Khmer breakfast, or you can make your own in our kitchen.
Otres Village is a wonderful community, every night there is some different social event to do, live music, family dinners, jungle party - something for everyo
